The Sokoto State Police Command on Tuesday said it arrested 40 alleged political thugs across the state with dangerous weapons.

The state Police Commissioner, Alhaji Shaiubu Gambo, said at a news conference in Sokoto that the suspects belonged to various political parties.

"Already, 23 of the suspects had been charged to court while investigations are going on in connection with the remaining 17 suspects.'

He said that 10 of the suspects were arrested for allegedly attacking Governor Aliyu Wamakko’s convoy on March 29. According to him, the command would charge the suspects to court after the conclusion of investigation on their individual roles and their motive.

Gambo said that the command had taken proactive security measures to ensure the arrest and prosecution of criminals in the state.

"We will not tolerate any act of political violence, as a special unit with effective communication gadgets, charged with the responsibilities of apprehending thugs, is always on red alert,” he said.

He urged political parties in the state to sensitise their supporters to the need to adhere to the rule of the game or have themselves to blame.

"Any act of violence that will tamper with the peaceful nature of the state will not be condoned. Dedicated officers have been stationed in strategic parts of our state to arrest and prosecute offenders,” he said.

Gambo also called on parents in the state not to allow their children to be used as political thugs by desperate politicians.

"They will use and dump them after archiving their set objectives,” he said.
