Chelsea had to stage a magnificent comeback to qualify for the semifinal of the UEFA Champions League beating Paris Saint Germain 2-0 and going through 3-3 on aggregate.
It was another vintage Chelsea, who had to cancel out a two-goal deficit just like they did against Napoli in 2012 en-route winning this elite football tournament.
Trailing 3-1 from the first leg,it looked like a mountainous task for Chelsea if they were to make the last four of the tournament.
Chelsea's task was made even more difficult when they lost one of their creative hub,Eden Hazard early on in the game to an injury.
But it was his substitute Andre Schurrle who set them in motion. The German pounced on a David Luiz's flick-on header from Branislav Ivanovic's long throw to send the Blues 1-0 up.
However, up until that moment Chelsea struggled as PSG were content with passing ball around without any penetration.
The goal gave Chelsea a lift and they started the second half in much motivation looking for that second goal that would put them through.
Chelsea twice struck the bar in quick succession, first was Schurrle then Oscar's freekick bouncing off the crossbar.
Edison Cavani missed a beautiful opportunity to have taken the tie beyond Chelsea, ballooning his effort over Petr Cech's post.
But Chelsea's patience paid off,Demba latched on to a searching ball in the box getting ahead of Maxwell to bundle home a goal with just minutes to the end of the game.
Chelsea held on and saw out the win to book their place in the last four of the Champions League.
Despite missing the services of their star man Zlatan Ibrahimovic through an injury,PSG would have themselves to blame for crashing out of the competition, when it looked as though they would have gone through.
Interestingly,Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho has never lost any of his quarterfinal games, and the win against PSG made it his ninth triumph in the last eight of the Champions League.
Meanwhile in the other quarterfinal game played on Tuesday,Real Madrid almost suffered a shock exit in the competition, losing 2-0 to Borussia Dortmund but going through 3-2 on aggregate.
Angel Di Maria had an early opportunity to kill off the contest, but his penalty was well saved by Weidenfellar.
Dortmund looked like they were going to cause an upset, capitalising on Madrid's errors to twice in go in front through Marco Reus.
Having Robert Lewandowski back from suspension,Madrid's back four was constantly occupied and looked like they would concede at every wave of attack by Dortmund at Westfalenstadion.
But Dortmund peppered Madrid for a goal, troubling and probing for that elusive third goal to force extra time.
The woodwork prevented Dortmund from levelling after Reus slipped in a beautiful pass toHenrikh Mkhitaryan, and he rounded Casillas but hit the post.
They got another chance to come back, but this time Mkhitaryan fired straight at Iker Casillas who had kept Madrid in the tie.
However,Madrid persevered, holding off the late challenge from their hosts to go through.
Both Chelsea and Real Madrid are now the first two teams in the last four, and they would be joined by the winners of the ties between Bayern Munich vs Manchester United and Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona on Wednesday.
