Johannesburg - An alleged robber was wounded in a shoot-out with police after he stole a metro police officer's gun and tried to hijack a bakkie in Randburg on Tuesday, Johannesburg metro police said.
"A metro police sergeant was drawing money at an ATM at a filling station just off the Beyers Naude off-ramp, when he was attacked by a man who robbed him of his firearm," spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said on Wednesday.
"There was a fight. The suspect managed to grab the firearm from the holster and pull it out."
The man, who appeared to be in his late 20s, then pointed the gun at the officer.
"He squeezed the trigger but it didn't go off."
Attempted hijack
The man ran onto the N1 highway and tried to hijack a silver Nissan bakkie. The driver and passenger were armed and, along with the metro officer pursuing the man on foot, gave chase.
"They chased him across the N1 freeway into an Imperial car rental dealership."
The man ran through the back into Linden, where he was cornered on a street.
"There was a stand-off between the robber and police for three hours where negotiations took place to get him to hand himself over. However, he refused to do that."
The police task force were called to the scene. They threw a stun grenade at him and he began shooting. Police shot and wounded him.
Minnaar said the man's condition was not serious and he would appear in court soon on charges of attempted murder, pointing a firearm, and theft.
