The First Lady of Nigeria, Dame Patience Jonathan has gushed about being married to the first citizen of Nigeria, President Goodluck Jonathan.

“My first impression of him was of a tall, dark, handsome young man. I also found that he came from a good Christianhome just like I did. His humble and gentle disposition caught my attention and most importantly, his intelligence.”
As a student at the Rivers State College of Education, little did former Miss Patience Oba know that one of her then lecturers in the college’s Department of Biological Sciences was going to be her husband.

They met while the President had just concluded his M.Sc programme, and was preparing for his doctorate. During the break, President Jonathan got a job as a lecturer, teaching students preparing for Nigerian Certificate of Education(NCE) and the B.Ed. Degree.
The couple fell in love and got married in 1993. Their marriage is blessed with four children, a son Arewera Adolphus, Daughters Aruabi and Abayola and Faith Sakwe-Edwards – who got married in April.

Speaking about the success of her marriage, the First Lady stresses that praying together and discussing everything together has been a sustaining force in their 21 year marriage.
“Both of us are from Christian homes and our complete trust is in Jesus Christ. We pray together as a family every morning. What keeps us together is that we are each others best friends and soul-mate. We discuss everything that comes up and advice each other accordingly. We depend on each other. We do not let the sun set on our grievances” she said.
